Mandatory Kit for Wansfell Mountain Race

Wansfell Mountain Race is a mountain race over technical terrain. The mandatory kit listed below MUST be worn and carried by all competitors at all times.

Please don’t try to take short cuts with your mandatory kit: the list is designed for your safety. No kit, no race.

Mandatory: this kit must be worn or carried:

  • Short or Long Sleeve base layer top (NO COTTON)
  • Shorts or tights (3/4 tights acceptable)
  • Mountain/Trail running shoes with minimum 3mm tread, e. g. Walsh PB, Salomon Fellraiser, La Sportiva C-lite, Inov-8 X-Talon or Mudclaw.
  • Safety pins x 4 (or other device for attaching race number)
  • Waterproof jacket & trousers (taped seams please)
  • Head torch, with enough light to run in the pitch black (Cloud and tree cover can make it very dark) - we advise 250 lumen's minimum
  • Whistle
  • Hat or buff
  • Gloves

Recommended: this kit may be worn or carried:

The following items are not mandatory; however, they are highly recommended for safe participation in all mountain running activities, including Wansfell Trail Race:

  • Spare long-sleeved base layer, Primaloft layer or similar (no cotton please)
  • First aid kit (minimum contents: bandage, plasters)
  • Survival Bag
  • Food/liquid appropriate to your needs on the course, plus emergency rations
  • GPS and/or Map & Compass
  • Race Vest/Small Pack to put it all in


    In addition to the items listed above, we strongly advise you take account of the prevailing weather conditions & dress accordingly. Your kit should be sufficient to keep you warm in the event that you are injured and have to walk back to safety.

    The Race Director reserves the right to extend the mandatory kit to include further items from the recommended kit list if in his judgement the conditions demand it. You will be informed of any changes to mandatory kit at the time of registration.
