The Place Fell 15k Trail Race is a low level technical trail race working its way along the shores of Ullswater, winding round the base of Place Fell, the monolithic mountain over looking Glenridding and Patterdale.
Its a great intro into our type of races where you can expect technical trails, hard ascents and fast technical descents. If you have your eyes set on skyrunning and sky-racing, then its a great place to start.
Starting in the King George Playing Field after the Rab Pinnacle Ridge Extreme Sky Race has set off, giving you beautiful views of the Ullswater and Boredale Valley's all the way round.
A fast start over fields and mildly technical trails, a quick road section delivers you to the first timing checkpoint and the start of the circumnavigation of Place Fell in an anti-clockwise direction.
Once past the first CP a technical trail and easy ascent take you past Silver Crag and directly down a stepped path to Silver Bay, from here its not far until you reach the Feed & Water Station, CP2.
Leaving Ullswater behind for a while the route curves round into Boredale and joins a tarmac road for a short while before the trail continues and starts to rise steeply to Boredale Hause [CP4] and awesome views of Kirkstone Pass and its surrounding fells.
Now get ready for the descent from Boredale Hause, fast and semi technical. At its foot you will go back through CP1, being CP5 this time and retrace your steps into the finish at the events centre.
The above image, with thanks to Harvey Maps, shows the provisional race route. There is likely to be some refinements before the race itself. Please keep an eye out for updates as they happen.
Underfoot terrain will be mixed. Grassy trods, well worn valley rails, sometimes very technical underfoot, hard/steep ascents and fast runnable but technical descents will all feature on this fully marked route.
There will be a cut-off at Sandwick Feed Station where drinks and quality food will be available (12:00), to ensure timely completion of the race route in daylight hours. Sunrise will be at approximately 05:10 with sunset at approximately 21:27, with the race running between the hours of 10:00 until 13:30.
A 100% sustainable 'seed bomb' medal awaits you at the finish in Patterdale.
